Is living in Australia expensive? That is one the most frequently asked questions by international students.
The cost of living for international students compared to other countries like USA or UK is much lower. The average weekly cost of living is 170 – 200 AUD, depends where and how you live and travel an of course how big spender you are. If you choose to study outside Sydney the costs tend to lower as well. But on the other hand you have to consider the job opportunities and social life options and in these aspects Sydney usually offers better conditions.
Australia is famous for its high-quality, well-priced food products, and its abundance of fresh local produce including meat, fish and vegetables. Major supermarkets are Woolworths, Coles, Franklins, Bi-lo.

It's a good idea to set up an Australian bank account as soon as you arrive. To open an account, you will need to provide your passport, visa and Australian address. It is difficult to recommend any of the banks they all offer very similar but of course high quality service. ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) are available at most shopping centers 24 hours a day for your convenience.
Once you have started your course in Australia and you choose to work, you must apply for a student visa with permission of work (fee of $60 will be charged). International students in Australia can work part-time (20 hours) during semester and full-time in holiday periods. Common students jobs are those in restaurants, shops and supermarkets - others get work doing tutoring, telephone sales, deliveries, nursing etc. Average wage differs from 10-20 AUD per hour (differs with type of position, location, your English, etc.)
