Accommodation

Finding a great place to stay is a one of the most important steps on your way to Australia. AUSSIE STUDY offers active assistance with arranging accomodation based on your needs and preferences. To give you a better overview of your options we have listed the most common possibilities of student accomodation in Australia.

Accommodation options:

HOTELS, HOSTELS

This type of accommodation can be arranged in advance (easiest way is to book online, for example www.hostelbookers.com). A lot of students choose to stay in a backpacker hostel, usually located in the centre of cities all over Australia especially immediately after their arrival. In hostels they can easilly meet other people and make new friendships and often move together with these people into other, long-term forms of accommodation. In hostels, usually you will stay in a 6 to 10 bed dormitory, sharing with both males and females. You can also choose to stay in a double room but it is usually a little bit more expensive than dorms. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are also shared. The prices tend to range from $22 per night in the large cities and $18 to $20 on both the East and West Coast. The standard of backpackers varies from place to place (even street to street!) but nowadays they are becoming pretty sophisticated and cater for all backpackers' needs, with internet cafes, travel and job centres, and a high standard of cleanliness and security throughout. Some of the larger hostels offer special deals to travellers and backpackers who intend to stay longer in a city whilst looking for work and ultimately share accommodation, such as 5 nights for the price of 4 and so on. Even though we recomend other types of accommodation in the long term, we can help you arrange this type of accomodation as well if you ask us to do so. We will provide you with advices as what parts of the town are safe and which are better to be avoided and so on… You can always rely on Aussie Study as we will surely give you honest and accurate information.

SHARING

This is the most common and popular form of accommodation among students. Basically, the term sharing stands for living together with other students, friends or relatives in an appartment of a house. This offers you freedom to come and go as you please, cook your own meals and live as you want to without having to abide by anybody else's rules. One of the best ways to save money is to rent a house with other friends who are also students or backpackers, which is called a share house. You can then share the bills and cleaning costs with your house-mates and if necessary put money together to buy furniture. There are many ways of finding share accommodation, from websites, national newspapers to noticeboards in backpackers and international colleges around Australia. You can rent houses, apartments or townhouses and rooms from a real estate agent or private owners, many of whom advertise in the national newspapers. Usually you will need to sign a lease or at least pay a bond of between approximately $100 to $500, as well as the first 4 weeks' rent. A bond covers any breakages or damage to property and will be returned to you when you vacate the property, providing it has remained in good condition. These properties might be furnished or unfurnished. Prices are different depending on the location as well. The most expensive options are living in the city centre or on the beaches. When calculating the price, you also need to consider the number of tennants. The more people live in the appartment, the less money they have to pay. In average, students pay 80 –160 AUD per week.
Students usualy preffer this form of accommodation as it is considered the most affordable Our Agency is actively assists in finding you the type of accommodation that will perfectly suit your needs. Before your arrival to Australia, we will personally find you a place to stay, we will send you the address and drive you there imediately after your airplane arrives.

HOMESTAY

A homestay is where the international students stay with a local family during the course of your studies. This is an excellent opportunity to improve your English skills if required, get to see life in an Australian family and learn more about the Australian way of life and culture. You will be welcomed as a member of the family and do things the whole family does, often including your own washing and cleaning! You can choose to have all your meals with the family or opt to buy your own food, in which the price would be different. The average price per week varies depending on which part of Australia you are in, but in Sydney for example the price might be as follows:
The cost of homestay is $220 per week for a single room or $190 per week for twin share, plus $150 as placement fee. You receive two meals (breakfast & dinner) during weekdays and three meals on Saturday and Sunday. Your room is fully furnished. Cost of electricity and water is inclusive.
Let us suppose, that you have already spent a couple of months in Australia and you settled in well. Maybe you would like to rent a whole flat personally. Here is a couple of advices how to do it…

RENTING

There are many ways how to rent an appartment or a house. You can rent houses, apartments or townhouses and rooms from a real estate agent or private owners, many of whom advertise in the national newspapers.Probably the best way is to search online, for example www.realestate.com.au is a great website where you just need to type in location, size and price you are willing to pay. After that, you need to arrange a personal meeting at the place you would possibly like to rent so that you avoid unpleasant surprises. To rent an appartment you will need to prove that you have enough financial resources on your bank account and the landlord will probably contact your employer as well to check whether you have good references. Usually you will need to sign a lease contract for 6 months. You will have to pay a bond of between approximately $100 to $500, as well as the first 4 weeks' rent. A bond covers any breakages or damage to property and will be returned to you when you vacate the property, providing it has remained in good condition. These properties might be furnished or unfurnished. Is there anything more you would like to enquire? Please do not hesitate to contact our AUSSIE STUDY team.
